School No. 5's Vision  

Providing all the benefits of an intimate and nurturing learning environment, School  No. 5, located at 168 Monroe Street, is considered one of the smaller schools in the district housing grades three through five, 337 students, within its’ 12 classrooms.   The academic, family, and community atmosphere promoted by our exceptional, highly qualified, and dedicated teachers and staff forms a bond that aids in promoting academic success and the social - emotional development so vital in forming future contributing citizens.

 

Students and teachers are actively involved with all new instructional initiatives in both literacy and mathematics.  Students are vested in language arts literay as we provide experiences that promote Reading, our Instructional Focus. Journeying through a variety of genres while focusing on essential comprehension skills, allows the students to learn in an authentic fashion linking the strategies to all subjects in the curriculum.  Embarking on this exciting educational adventure, they take responsibility and ownership in their learning through varied student centered activities and strategies. All our activities, field trips and assemblies are geared to reflect the required curriculum and enhance the learning experience adding an authentic ingredient.

 

Teachers continually analyze data from a multitude of different sources utilizing its finding to drive instruction and meet our students’ individual academic needs.  Grade level meetings, co-planning, data analysis workshops, professional development days and faculty meetings focus on addressing the needs of all students. We are dedicated in overcoming any obstacle that might block our students’ journey in the educational realm.

 

Intent on fostering collaboration between its teachers, staff, students, parents, and the community, School No. 5 has a vibrant and enthusiastic Parent Team.  Parents participate in Monthly workshops that address the needs of our students and community. The programs and workshops for our parents cover diverse topics such as: English as a Second Language, Budget Development, Title I, Homework Help, Math, Language Arts, Testing, Health, Special Education, Gang Awareness, and Bullying. Parent involvement contributes to the success of School No. 5. The strong alliance between home and school is a vital component of School No. 5’s Family.


School No. 5 promotes emotional growth through the teaching of tolerance, acceptance, nonviolence, and compassion instilling moral values.  This is achieved through the many cultural enrichment programs creating an appreciation and understanding of our diverse society.  These programs include a variety of ethnic assemblies comprised of our students and through professional groups and motivational speakers coming into the school during Hispanic Heritage Month, African American History Month.

 

Additional initiatives to encourage the pursuit of educational excellence:  Gifted and Talented Program, Safety Patrol, Chorus, Orchestra, LMTI Club, Student-of-the-Month, Red Ribbon Drug Prevention, Anti-Bullying, Child Assault Prevention and Fruits and Vegetables programs. These programs provide our students with the necessary tools to maintain a safe and healthy life style. 

Through the school atmosphere, programs, and activities taking place at School No. 5, we are guaranteeing our students an authentic springboard toward a positive interdependence among the home, school, and community. Our partnership efforts guarantee that all students’ needs are met academically, emotionally, and socially.
