Since its establishment in 1908, Roosevelt School #10 has provided a quality public education experience for the students of the City of Passaic. After 104 years, Roosevelt School #10 prides itself as a top elementary school within the Passaic City School District. This is evidenced by the  success of our graduating fourth grade class. Ninety two percent of our fourth grade class were proficient or advanced proficient in mathematics on the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge test. This is an increase from a very successful eighty eight percent last year. In addition, this year ninety one percent of our fourth graders were proficient or advanced proficient in science on the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge test. We are proud of those achievements and the desire of all our students to continue their academic growth and improvement each and every year.

With a student population of about 750 students enrolled in kindergarten to grade four, the administrator, teachers, and staff welcome the challenges of the 2011-2012 school year. Our instructional staff is comprised of dedicated educators who utilize best practices for student success in all content areas according to the New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards for Excellence. We are transitioning into following the Common Core State Standards which will be fully implemented by 2014. Our teachers attend a wide variety of professional development workshops and take part in school committees that look at instructional data, the learning environment, and future concerns.

  As a school with 94 percent of our students using English as their second language, our instructional focus continues to be reading. Our challenge is to ensure that each student acquires the necessary literacy skills and strategies through daily instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. Those students reading below grade level receive supplemental and intervention instruction as needed. Reading is integrated throughout the content areas daily. The Five Step Writing Process is stressed as an integral part of the literacy process.

  This is the second year our school will be using the Developmental Reading Assessment and the Evaluation del desarollo de la lectura as measurement tools. This will provide the teachers with multiple assessments that identify individual achievement levels, highlight areas of strength, and diagnose areas for growth. Teachers use that assessment data to differentiate instruction and meet the diverse needs of our students.

  Teachers and administrators are attending workshops on two of the district’s new initiatives, Power School and Tetra Data. The proficiency we gain will enable us to access, analyze, and use data to improve results and increase student achievement. This year we will be adding new SMART boards into three of our classrooms. With the continued use of SMART boards and  notebook computers, we will vary instructional modalities and expand the classroom’s learning environment.

  All students will continue the use of Everyday Math and FASTT Math. Everyday Math is a standards-based program that allows students to think, explore, discover, and do math while emphasizing the content and the methodology. FASTT Math provides the necessary practice and drill in a fun but challenging way through technology that allows the students to become fluent in math facts.

  Our curriculum also includes the FOSS science program which is a researched based curriculum with hands on projects. Students are taught important scientific concepts while developing critical thinking through their own analyses and investigations.

The Social Studies Nystrom kits also take a hands-on activity based approach. The program works map skills and geography into the Social studies curriculum. The students follow the program from neighborhood, to community, and then to various regions of our country.

Throughout the school year students are exposed to a number of cultural, social, and academic experiences through assemblies, field trips, and holiday celebrations. The students have extracurricular activities that include Choir, Gifted and Talented Dance, Drama, and Safety Patrols.

Roosevelt School #10 has a monthly breakfast for our parents which is hosted by our parent liason. The breakfast is a time where parents, school faculty, and administrators can come together and discuss school and community news. Our goal is have our school as the center of the community. We offer English as a Second Language lessons, computer classes, exercise and nutrition classes, workshops, and educational trips for our parents. We are constantly working on building a strong partnership between the home and our school. This strong relationship allows us to share the responsibility and rejoice in the achievements of our students.
