Martin Luther King School 6 is a pre kindergarten through grade 6 elementary school where more than 1,100 students are provided with quality instruction throughout the school day.Our dedicated highly qualified staff of 110 teachers provides a thorough and efficient education to all of our students while engaging them with a challenging and rigorous curriculum.

Pre Kindergarten students follow the comprehensive High Scope Curriculum.  During Language Arts Literacy, students in kindergarten through grade 3 continue using the framework of the Reading First Initiative which bases instruction on scientifically researched principles. Our intermediate students in grades 4 through 6 are following the LEADS initiative.  Students engage in Project Based Learning which reflects the core curriculum standards.  Learning stations are in evidence throughout all of our classrooms.  Students work together and share ideas through co operative learning.  Literacy coaches support teachers and students daily. They often model lessons and support student learning and progress through Reader's Workshop, guided reading, literacy circles, Interventions, technology, and centers.  Student progress is monitored daily.  Progress monitoring, unit, local and state assessments also serve as tools for tracking student progress.  Student work is monitored and evidence of it is contained in individual student Reading, Writing, and Math portfolios.

Our school wide writing program continues.  There is a writing curriculum where students engage in writing through Writer's Workshop. Student writing portfolios showcase individual student writing samples.  Writing is a powerful tool and students realize that it is a forum which unlocks the power of their voice.

Math is our focus.   Our hallways and classrooms reflect this focus.Students use Everyday Math and Connected Math in the classroom.  These series focus on using many resources as tools to understand Math concepts. Our Math coaches support daily instruction for both the teachers and students. The use of manipulatives, calendar math, problem of the day, math message, writing in math, centers, and co-operative learning are our best practices.  Teaching and learning mathematics by using children's literature has become a valuable resource for our students so that they have a clearer understanding of math concepts.  A Math focus teacher provides additional instruction by using manipulatives and literature as a source to reinforce math concepts and application skills.

Teachers collaborate weekly at grade level meetings. These agenda based meetings are used as a forum to discuss, model and reinforce a strong literacy and math implementation in all our classrooms. It is a time for professional development, planning, collaboration, demonstrating best practices, and analyzing student data as well as progress monitoring. These grade level meetings are a springboard to activate schemata in all classrooms throughout the curriculum.

Parent workshops are offered throughout the year by the Literacy and Math coaches.Workshops address our math focus, literacy, and all content areas of the curriculum.  They allow parents to develop an understanding of the curriculum while engaging in activities that provide them with materials for them to use with their children at home. These meetings provide information about our school and its activities.

Partnering with the home and community are important to Martin Luther King Jr. Number 6 School. Trips to the Liberty Science Center, movie night, family bingo, an ice cream social, and a family picnic are just a few highlights that link home, school, and the community together. Our Fine Arts and Drama Department showcases our students talents with a winter and spring concert.Workshops for our parents are provided through local agencies to build a bridge between the home and school.

Our school provides after school programs.A Champions program is offered to students in Pre-K-2nd grade as well as the NJ After 3 for students in grades K-6.

Working together with the home and community, Martin Luther King, Jr. School Number 6 strives to provide academic excellence for all.
