With an exceptionally strong interest in student/parent involvement and education, Maryann Capursi knew that she always wanted to become a school Board member.  As a parent herself, Capursi believes that “having more parental involvement and providing before and after-schoool programs encourage students to be actively engaged in their school community.”  This newly appointed member additionally adds, “I am very proud to be a strong, independent, proud mother who has high expectations to instill morals in my young son so that he can grow to become a productive, honest citizen in our community.”

Concerned with the overall education of all Passaic students, this neophyte wants to bring innovative ideas to the Board by using her expertise in the urban education system.  A graduate of New Jersey City University, Commissioner Capursi received her Bachelor of Arts and her Masters in Urban Education from the university.  She also holds certifications in Elementary Education K-8 and a Teacher of English as a Second Language.  Currently, Maryann Capursi teaches seventh grade math in the Jersey City Public School District.  Her prior teaching experience of ten years has involved servicing students in the ESL program, inclusion settings, and gifted/talented.

Obviously, her training and educational expertise will not only assist in Board decisions, but also help Passaic’s students prepare for 21st century challenges to become productive citizens.

Throughout the year, Ms. Capursi would like to see positive results in students’ academic and social endeavors, beginning with improvement in state test scores and eventually a goal where all schools meet AYP.

In addition to chairing the Curriculum and Education Committee, she is serving on the Cafeteria, School Safety, Technology, and Community Relations Committees.
